The History Department at Keswick High School invites students to explore the stories that have shaped our world. History satisfies a fundamental human desire to understand our past, and through its narratives, we hear and see the people, events, emotions, struggles, and triumphs that have shaped the present and will influence the future. By studying history, students gain insight into other times and places, learning that our achievements and challenges are part of a broader human experience—a vital perspective in our increasingly interconnected world.
At KHS, students build a strong foundation in Canadian history through the compulsory Grade 10 course, Canadian History Since World War I, which examines the events and personalities that have defined our nation since 1914. In Grades 11 and 12, optional courses in Canadian History, American History, and World History allow students to investigate the past in greater depth and consider the challenges societies face today and in the future.
The History Department also provides students with the compulsory ½-credit in Civics alongside elective courses in Philosophy and Law, offering opportunities to explore human thought, society, and ethical decision-making. Through discussion, analysis, and critical inquiry, students develop the skills to understand complex issues, make informed decisions, and appreciate the stories that connect us all.
At KHS, the study of history goes beyond memorizing dates—it’s about understanding people, events, and ideas and using that knowledge to engage thoughtfully with the world.
